Ukrainian Flag over Ottawa
In the very heart of Canada’s capital, at Ottawa City Hall, the Ukrainian blue-and-yellow flag was solemnly raised today. On these days, as we honour the National Flag and celebrate the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence, this moment carries special meaning.
Side by side with the Canadian flag, our reminds everyone: Ukraine stands. Ukraine fights. And Ukraine has friends who stand beside her.
There were many heartfelt words from Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, the Honourable Mona Fortier, representing Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, and Rear-Admiral, the Honourable Rebecca Patterson, Senator of Canada. The speeches by EU Chargé d’Affaires in Canada Aurélie Bonal and Louis Sabourin, representing the Mayor of Gatineau, were especially touching. From Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Ottawa Branch, the gathering was greeted by board member Olya Kinash.
Our sincere gratitude to everyone who said this morning: “We are with Ukraine!”
A particularly moving moment came when two children struck the Bell of Independence - in honour of all those who fight for freedom today, and in memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian blue-and-yellow flag was raised over Ottawa next to the Canadian one. Not as a guest, but as an equal friend and partner. And this is what true unity of nations means: one standing against Russian aggression and tyranny, the other supporting it in this struggle.
We thank all guests, friends, partners, and the Ukrainian community who were with us today. Let us keep in our minds and hearts a simple truth: this flag is more than colors. More than history. It is a sacred faith that Ukraine will endure - because supporting Ukrainians today means defending the very idea of freedom.
Glory to Ukraine!
